Skype is a peer-to-peer VoIP networking system created in 2004 by the former inventors of the Kazaa music sharing network. Users who download the free Skype software become part of the network allowing them to use it for conversations with other users but also facilitating the operation of the network itself. While calls from the PC to other Skype equipped PC users are free, Skype offers calling to regular phones through the SkypeOut pre-paid card. Similarly calls can be received by the computer through SkypeIn. In June 2005, Skype added voice mail to its service.

In September 2005, eBay offered more than $5bn to purchase Skype.
