Headline:
XO Communications, a survivor of the
telecom bubble of the early 2000's, offers a
comprehensive bundled pack for small
businesses including Internet Access, Web
Hosting and VoIP.
Overview:
XO
Communications was originally incorporated
as NextLink in 1994, by Craig McCaw and his
brother, after having sold their wireless
phone company to AT&T for $13bn. NextLink
built a business combining the operation of
an interexchange network as well as Internet
service provision. It changed its name to XO
in 2000, as it merged with Concentric
Communications. The company grew rapidly
through the telecoms boom of the late 1990's
and into 2000 investing more than $5 billion
in network expansion, but suffered financial
difficulties in 2002 and filed for Chapter
11 protection from insolvency that year. It
emerged from the filing in 2003 with
significantly reduced debt, and with Carl
Icahn, the billionaire investor, as its
controlling shareholder, and Carl Grivner,
from Global Crossing, as its CEO
The company operates a large fiber optic
network, consisting of close to 1,000,000
miles of fiber spread throughout the US with
links to Hong Kong, the UK and the
Netherlands.
XO launched its hosted VoIP service in March
2005. Known as XOptions Flex is available in
more than 45 US markets through XO's own
network. It is suited for small businesses
with between 5 and 50 users and has
VPN features that will be useful for
multi-site companies. Unlike most other
providers XO also bundles in Web Hosting
capabilities. This makes it a good fit for
companies that are looking for a single
supplier for their various communications
needs.
The company states that it has close to
2,000 companies using its Xoptions Flex
service.
In November 2005, the company announced that
had an accepted an offer of $700 million
from Carl Icahn for the non-wireless parts
of its business, and that it would focus on
the fixed wireless sector. The XO
Communication name will move with the
non-wireless activities.
